"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." — Luke 19:10 (NIV)
Many people think Christianity is mainly about following a long list of rules. They believe being a Christian means avoiding certain behaviors, attending church every Sunday, and trying to be a "good person." While obedience and holy living are important, the heart of Christianity is not a set of rules—it is a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Rules without a relationship can lead to legalism, guilt, and frustration. But a genuine relationship with God transforms the heart and naturally produces a life of obedience.
What Is the Difference Between Rules and Relationship?
Rules Focus on External Behavior
Rules tell us what we should or should not do. They are important because they reveal God's standards for holy living. However, rules alone cannot change the human heart.
The religious leaders in Jesus' day carefully followed many laws, yet many of them failed to recognize the Messiah standing before them.
Matthew 23:27-28 (NIV)
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."
Jesus was not condemning obedience. He was exposing religion that focused only on outward appearances while neglecting the heart.
Relationship Changes the Heart
God desires more than religious activity. He wants fellowship with His children.
From the beginning, God created people to walk with Him. Sin separated humanity from God, but Jesus came to restore that relationship through His death and resurrection.
John 17:3 (NIV)
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
Notice that eternal life is described as knowing God, not merely knowing about Him.
Christianity is not simply learning Bible facts or attending church services. It is living daily with Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Why Did God Give Us His Commandments?
Some people ask, "If Christianity is about relationship, why did God give commandments?"
The answer is simple:
God's commands are not designed to earn His love—they are given because He loves us.
Just as loving parents establish rules to protect their children, God's commands guide us toward abundant life.
Jesus said:
John 14:15 (NIV)
"If you love me, keep my commands."
Notice the order.
We do not obey so that God will love us.
We obey because we already love Him.
Love produces obedience.
Salvation Is by Grace, Not by Rule-Keeping
No one can earn salvation through good works or perfect obedience.
The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is God's gift.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
If following rules could save us, Jesus would not have needed to die on the cross.
His sacrifice paid the price for our sins once and for all.
Relationship Produces Obedience
Some people misunderstand grace and think they can live however they please.
But a true relationship with Christ changes a person's desires.
When the Holy Spirit lives within us, He helps us become more like Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
Transformation begins from the inside.
Instead of obeying out of fear, believers obey out of love.
Jesus Invites Us Into Friendship
One of the most beautiful truths in the Bible is that Jesus calls His followers friends.
John 15:15 (NIV)
"I no longer call you servants... Instead, I have called you friends."
Think about that.
The Creator of the universe desires a personal relationship with you.
He listens when you pray.
He speaks through His Word.
He guides you through the Holy Spirit.
He walks with you every day.
That is far more than religion.
Signs You Are Living by Rules Instead of Relationship
Ask yourself these questions:
Do I pray only when I need something?
Do I read the Bible only out of obligation?
Am I trying to earn God's approval?
Do I compare my spirituality with others?
Do I feel guilty more than grateful?
If you answered "yes" to several of these, God is inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him.
His love is not earned—it is received by faith.
How to Build a Relationship With God
A growing relationship with God develops through daily fellowship.
1. Spend Time in Prayer
Prayer is not a ritual but a conversation with your Heavenly Father.
Philippians 4:6
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
2. Read God's Word Daily
The Bible is how God reveals His character and His will.
Psalm 119:105
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
3. Obey What God Says
Obedience is the fruit of love.
James 1:22
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
4. Walk With Other Believers
Growing in faith is easier when we encourage one another.
Hebrews 10:24-25
"Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together..."
Final Thoughts
Christianity is not about trying harder to impress God. It is about receiving His grace through Jesus Christ and growing in a loving relationship with Him.
Rules have their place because they reveal God's holy standard, but they can never replace knowing Him personally. When we know Christ, our hearts are transformed, and obedience becomes the natural response to His love.
Instead of asking, "What rules must I keep?" ask, "How can I know Jesus more today?"
That question leads to a life of true faith.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me even when I fall short. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to restore my relationship with You. Forgive me for the times I have focused more on religious duties than on knowing You personally.
Help me to seek You every day through prayer, Your Word, and obedience that flows from love. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and transform my heart so that my life reflects the character of Christ. Teach me to trust Your grace, walk in Your truth, and grow closer to You each day.
May my faith be rooted in a genuine relationship with You and not merely in outward actions. Draw me near, strengthen my faith, and help me live for Your glory.
In Jesus' mighty name,
Amen.
