What Makes a Person Truly Spiritual?

Introduction

In today's world, many people describe themselves as "spiritual." Some believe being spiritual means attending church regularly, praying in public, performing religious rituals, or having deep emotional experiences. However, the Bible teaches that true spirituality goes much deeper than outward appearances or religious activities.

A truly spiritual person is someone whose life is transformed by the Holy Spirit and who seeks to know, love, and obey God. Spirituality is not measured by how much religious knowledge we possess but by how closely we walk with Christ and reflect His character in our daily lives.

So, what does the Bible say makes a person truly spiritual?

1. A Truly Spiritual Person Has a Relationship with Jesus Christ

Everything begins with salvation. Without Christ, no one can become truly spiritual because spiritual life comes from God.

Jesus said:

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
— John 14:6 (NIV)

When we place our faith in Jesus, God gives us new life through the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new is here!"

True spirituality starts with a transformed heart, not religious performance.

2. A Truly Spiritual Person Is Led by the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit guides believers into God's truth and helps them live according to God's will.

Romans 8:14

"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God."

Being spiritual means allowing God to direct our decisions, attitudes, and actions instead of following our sinful desires.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I seek God's direction before making decisions?

  • Am I willing to obey God even when it is difficult?

3. A Truly Spiritual Person Produces the Fruit of the Spirit

One of the clearest signs of true spirituality is not spiritual gifts but spiritual fruit.

Galatians 5:22–23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

These qualities cannot be manufactured by human effort alone. They are produced as we remain connected to Christ.

If our lives are marked by anger, pride, bitterness, hatred, or selfishness, we should ask God to continue transforming us.

4. A Truly Spiritual Person Loves God and Loves Others

Jesus summarized God's commandments into two great principles.

Matthew 22:37–39

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... Love your neighbor as yourself."

Love is the greatest evidence of spiritual maturity.

A spiritual person:

  • Forgives others.

  • Shows compassion.

  • Serves people without expecting recognition.

  • Speaks kindly.

  • Cares for those in need.

Without love, even impressive religious acts lose their value.

1 Corinthians 13:1–3 reminds us that gifts and achievements mean little without genuine love.

5. A Truly Spiritual Person Obeys God's Word

Knowing Scripture is important, but obedience is what demonstrates true spirituality.

James 1:22

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

God desires believers who practice His Word every day.

This includes:

  • Living honestly.

  • Speaking truthfully.

  • Forgiving others.

  • Remaining faithful.

  • Rejecting sinful habits.

  • Walking in humility.

Obedience reflects a heart that trusts God.

6. A Truly Spiritual Person Lives Humbly

Pride is one of the greatest enemies of spiritual growth.

Jesus Himself modeled humility by serving others.

Philippians 2:3–5

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves... In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus."

True spirituality never seeks attention or praise.

Instead, it points others to God.

7. A Truly Spiritual Person Prays Regularly

Prayer keeps us connected to God.

It is more than asking for blessings—it is spending time with our Heavenly Father.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances."

A spiritual person develops a consistent prayer life because they understand they cannot live without God's help.

8. A Truly Spiritual Person Continues Growing

Spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey.

No believer becomes perfect overnight.

The Apostle Paul wrote:

Philippians 3:13–14

"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal."

True spirituality means continually seeking to become more like Jesus every day.

9. A Truly Spiritual Person Walks by Faith

Faith is trusting God even when circumstances are difficult.

2 Corinthians 5:7

"For we live by faith, not by sight."

Instead of relying only on feelings or visible evidence, spiritual people trust God's promises.

Their confidence rests in God's faithfulness.

10. A Truly Spiritual Person Reflects Christ

Ultimately, the goal of every believer is to become more like Jesus.

Our words, actions, attitudes, and decisions should point people toward Him.

Jesus taught:

Matthew 5:16

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

True spirituality is not about appearing holy—it is about becoming more like Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Signs of True Spirituality

According to the Bible, a truly spiritual person:

  • Has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Is led by the Holy Spirit.

  • Produces the fruit of the Spirit.

  • Loves God wholeheartedly.

  • Loves others sincerely.

  • Obeys God's Word.

  • Walks in humility.

  • Maintains a faithful prayer life.

  • Continues growing spiritually.

  • Reflects the character of Christ.

Conclusion

The world often measures spirituality by appearance, knowledge, or religious activities. God looks at the heart. A truly spiritual person is not someone who appears religious but someone whose life has been transformed by Jesus Christ.

As we surrender ourselves daily to God, study His Word, pray faithfully, obey His commands, and allow the Holy Spirit to shape our character, we become the people God created us to be.

May our desire never be simply to look spiritual, but to genuinely know Christ and reflect His love in every area of our lives.

"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen."
— 2 Peter 3:18

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit to guide, teach, and transform us. Lord, help us not to settle for outward religion or empty traditions. Create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us.

Teach us to love You with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Fill our lives with the fruit of the Holy Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help us to obey Your Word faithfully, walk humbly before You, and trust You in every circumstance.

May our lives reflect the character of Jesus so that others may see Your goodness through us. Strengthen us to grow spiritually each day, remain faithful in prayer, and follow wherever You lead.

We surrender our hearts completely to You. Make us truly spiritual people who honor You in every thought, word, and action.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen.
