Understanding the Battle We Cannot See
Spiritual warfare is a biblical term that describes the unseen battle between good and evil, truth and deception, and the purposes of God and the forces that oppose them. Although we live in a physical world, the Bible teaches that there is also a spiritual realm that influences the lives, choices, and struggles of people.
The Christian life is not always easy. Believers may face temptation, fear, discouragement, confusion, hatred, and opposition to their faith. However, the Bible reminds us that our greatest battle is not against people.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
What Is Spiritual Warfare?
Spiritual warfare is the conflict between the kingdom of God and the forces of evil. It involves the battle against sin, temptation, lies, fear, and anything that seeks to draw people away from God.
This does not mean that every problem we face is caused by a spiritual attack. Sometimes difficulties come from our own choices, the actions of others, or the natural challenges of life. However, the Bible makes it clear that believers must remain spiritually alert.
The Enemy's Main Weapon Is Deception
One of the greatest weapons used against people is deception. Satan seeks to make people doubt God's Word, question God's love, and believe lies.
From the beginning, the enemy used deception to tempt humanity. Jesus called the devil “a liar” and the father of lies (John 8:44).
That is why Christians must know the truth of God's Word. When we know the truth, we are better prepared to recognize and reject lies.
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:32 (KJV)
How Do Christians Fight Spiritual Battles?
The Bible teaches that believers do not fight spiritual battles with physical weapons. God has given us spiritual weapons and spiritual protection.
1. The Word of God
The Word of God is powerful and helps us stand against lies and temptation.
When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He responded with the Word of God (Matthew 4:1–11). This teaches us the importance of knowing and applying Scripture.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword.”
— Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
2. Prayer
Prayer connects us with God and gives us strength. Through prayer, we seek God's guidance, protection, wisdom, and power.
Prayer does not mean that we never face problems. It means that we do not face them alone.
“Pray without ceasing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)
3. Faith
Faith enables us to trust God even when circumstances are difficult. The Bible describes faith as a shield against the attacks of the enemy.
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”
— Ephesians 6:16 (KJV)
4. Righteous Living
A believer must choose to walk in obedience to God. We cannot intentionally live in sin while expecting to walk effectively in spiritual victory.
James 4:7 gives us an important principle:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
— James 4:7 (KJV)
Notice the order: first, submit to God; then, resist the devil.
5. The Armor of God
Ephesians 6:10–18 describes the armor God gives to believers:
The belt of truth
The breastplate of righteousness
The shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace
The shield of faith
The helmet of salvation
The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
Prayer
This armor reminds us that spiritual victory comes from God. We are not expected to fight spiritual battles in our own strength.
Our Victory Is Through Christ
The most important truth about spiritual warfare is that believers do not fight for victory as though the outcome is uncertain. Through Jesus Christ, we have hope and victory.
Jesus defeated the power of sin and death through His death and resurrection. Therefore, Christians can stand firm in Him.
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
— Romans 8:37 (KJV)
Spiritual warfare is not a reason to live in fear. The Bible encourages believers to remain watchful, prayerful, faithful, and confident in God.
“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
— 1 John 4:4 (KJV)
Conclusion
Spiritual warfare is a real biblical reality, but Christians should not live in fear of the enemy. God has given us His Word, prayer, faith, righteousness, and the armor of God.
When we remain close to God, stand firmly on His truth, and trust in Jesus Christ, we can face spiritual battles with courage. The battle may be real, but God is greater, His power is greater, and His victory is certain.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being my strength, my protector, and my refuge. Help me to understand spiritual warfare and to remain strong in You. Give me wisdom to recognize deception, courage to resist temptation, and faith to stand firm in difficult times.
Help me to put on the whole armor of God. Let Your truth guide me, Your righteousness protect me, and Your Word strengthen me. Guard my heart and mind from fear, confusion, and discouragement.
Lord Jesus, help me to remember that my victory is found in You. Give me the grace to remain faithful, prayerful, and obedient to Your Word.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
