How to Put God First in Your Daily Life

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33

Putting God first is more than saying that God is important to us. It means allowing Him to guide our decisions, shape our priorities, influence our relationships, and direct the way we live each day.

In a world filled with responsibilities, distractions, social media, school, work, friendships, entertainment, and personal ambitions, it can be easy to give God whatever time is left over.

But God does not want to be an afterthought. He wants to be at the center of our lives.

When we put God first, we begin to see our daily lives differently. We learn to depend on Him, seek His wisdom, obey His Word, and trust Him with our future.

What Does It Mean to Put God First?

Putting God first means giving Him the highest place in your life.

It means asking:

“What does God want me to do?”

before simply asking:

“What do I want to do?”

It means choosing God's ways even when they are different from our own desires.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

God should not only be part of our Sunday worship or prayer time. He should be involved in every area of our lives.

1. Start Your Day With God

One of the best ways to put God first is to begin your day with Him.

Before you become busy with your phone, messages, social media, school, work, or other responsibilities, take time to pray and read God's Word.

Even if you only have a few minutes, use that time to say:

“Lord, thank You for giving me another day. Guide me today. Help me to live according to Your will.”

Starting your day with God reminds you that you are not facing the day alone.

Psalm 5:3 says:

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.”

2. Make God's Word Part of Your Daily Routine

You cannot consistently follow God's will if you never take time to learn His Word.

The Bible teaches us who God is, what He desires, and how He wants us to live.

Set aside time each day to read Scripture. You could begin with a chapter or a short passage and think carefully about what God is teaching you.

Ask yourself:

  • What does this passage teach me about God?

  • What does it teach me about how I should live?

  • Is there something I need to change?

  • Is there a promise I need to trust?

  • How can I apply this Scripture today?

Psalm 119:105 says:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

3. Pray Throughout the Day

Prayer should not only happen when you are in trouble.

Develop a relationship with God where you talk to Him throughout your day.

Pray when you are happy. Pray when you are confused. Pray before making important decisions. Pray when you need wisdom. Thank Him when something good happens.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 simply says:

“Pray without ceasing.”

This does not mean you must spend every minute speaking aloud. It means maintaining an attitude of dependence on God and turning to Him throughout your day.

4. Put God First in Your Decisions

Before making important decisions, seek God's wisdom.

Instead of rushing into something because it looks attractive or because everyone else is doing it, pause and ask:

“Does this honor God?”

Ask God for wisdom and compare your choices with His Word.

James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who gives generously.

God cares about the decisions you make.

Whether it concerns friendships, education, work, relationships, finances, or your future, invite God into the decision-making process.

5. Obey God Even When It Is Difficult

Putting God first is not only about reading the Bible. It is also about obeying what God says.

Jesus said in John 14:15:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

Sometimes obedience will require you to walk away from something that looks attractive.

Sometimes it means forgiving someone.

Sometimes it means telling the truth when lying would be easier.

Sometimes it means refusing to follow the crowd.

When God's Word gives you direction, choose obedience even when it is difficult.

6. Guard What Influences Your Heart

What you watch, listen to, read, and constantly think about can influence your heart and your choices.

This does not mean that everything around you is automatically wrong. It means you should be wise about what you allow to dominate your thoughts.

Philippians 4:8 encourages believers to focus their minds on things that are true, honorable, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise.

Ask yourself:

“Is this bringing me closer to God or pulling my heart away from Him?”

Choose influences that strengthen your faith rather than constantly distracting you from God.

7. Put God First With Your Time

Everyone receives the same 24 hours in a day, but how we use that time reveals our priorities.

If we can spend hours scrolling through social media but struggle to spend even a few minutes in prayer or Scripture, we should examine our priorities.

This does not mean that you cannot relax, enjoy hobbies, or spend time with friends and family.

It means God should not continually receive whatever time is left over.

Make time for prayer, Scripture, worship, fellowship, service, and spiritual growth.

Ephesians 5:15–16 reminds us to walk wisely and make the most of our time.

8. Put God First in Your Relationships

God should influence the way you treat other people.

Putting God first means choosing love instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of bitterness, humility instead of pride, and kindness instead of cruelty.

Jesus taught that loving God and loving others are central to God's commandments.

Your relationship with God should become visible through the way you treat people.

Ask:

“Does the way I treat this person reflect the character of Christ?”

9. Trust God With Your Future

Sometimes we struggle to put God first because we are afraid that following Him will cause us to miss out on something.

But God sees what we cannot see.

You may have plans for your future, and there is nothing wrong with having dreams and goals. However, learn to surrender those plans to God.

Proverbs 16:3 says:

“Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.”

Tell God:

“Lord, I have plans, but I want Your will above my own.”

Trust Him with your future.

10. Put God First Even When Life Is Difficult

It is easy to praise God when everything is going well.

The real test of our faith often comes during difficult seasons.

When prayers seem unanswered, when plans fail, or when life becomes confusing, continue seeking God.

Do not allow difficult circumstances to convince you that God has abandoned you.

Psalm 46:1 says:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

God is not only worthy of our attention when life is comfortable. He remains worthy of our trust in every season.

What Happens When You Put God First?

Putting God first does not mean that your life will become completely free of problems.

Instead, it changes the way you face those problems.

You begin to develop:

  • Greater peace

  • Stronger faith

  • Better spiritual discipline

  • Wisdom for decisions

  • A deeper relationship with God

  • Greater confidence in God's promises

  • A heart that desires to obey God

Most importantly, you begin to understand that your life is not centered around yourself. It belongs to God.

A Simple Daily Routine for Putting God First

You can start with something simple.

Morning: Pray and read God's Word.

During the day: Talk to God and ask for His guidance.

Before decisions: Seek God's wisdom.

In relationships: Choose love, forgiveness, humility, and kindness.

When tempted: Remember God's Word and choose obedience.

At night: Thank God for the day, confess your mistakes, and surrender tomorrow to Him.

You do not need a complicated routine. What matters is developing a genuine relationship with God and consistently making Him your priority.

Final Encouragement

Putting God first is a daily decision.

You will not get everything right every day. There may be days when you become distracted, forget to pray, or allow other things to take God's place in your heart.

When that happens, do not give up.

Return to God.

Seek Him again.

Ask Him to help you.

God is not looking for a perfect person. He desires a heart that sincerely seeks Him.

Jesus said:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” — Matthew 6:33

So make God your first priority—not only on Sunday, not only when you need help, and not only when life is difficult, but every day.

When God is first, everything else can find its proper place.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me another day and another opportunity to know You more deeply.

Help me to put You first in every area of my life. Teach me to seek Your kingdom before my own desires. Give me wisdom to make decisions that honor You and strength to obey Your Word even when it is difficult.

Help me manage my time wisely, choose my influences carefully, treat people with love, and trust You with my future.

When I become distracted, draw my heart back to You. When I become discouraged, remind me of Your promises. When I become afraid, help me remember that You are with me.

Lord, I surrender my plans, dreams, relationships, decisions, and future to You.

Be at the center of my life.

Help me to love You, serve You, obey You, and walk with You every day.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
