A Call Back to God
In the journey of life, it is easy to become distracted. We can become busy with work, family, responsibilities, church activities, and the cares of this world. Sometimes, without realizing it, we slowly drift away from the One who loved us first—God.
Many people still attend church, read the Bible occasionally, or even serve in ministry, yet their hearts may no longer burn with the same love for God. The passion for prayer may have faded. The joy of worship may have become routine. The desire to know God's Word may have weakened.
This is why God calls us to return to our first love.
What Does It Mean to Return to Your First Love?
The phrase “first love” reminds us of the deep love and devotion we once had for God. It speaks of a relationship with Him that is sincere, passionate, and wholehearted.
In Revelation, Jesus spoke to the church in Ephesus. They were hardworking and faithful in many ways, but something important was missing:
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” — Revelation 2:4 (NKJV)
The problem was not that they had stopped doing good works. The problem was that their love for Christ was no longer at the center of everything they did.
God does not only want our activities. He wants our hearts.
How Do We Lose Our First Love?
We may lose our passion for God through distractions, worldly desires, spiritual laziness, disappointment, unanswered prayers, unconfessed sin, or simply becoming too busy to pray and study God's Word.
Sometimes, we do not deliberately walk away from God. We simply become distracted until we realize that we are no longer as close to Him as we once were.
The good news is that God is always ready to receive us when we return to Him.
God Is Calling You Back
God's desire is not to condemn those who have drifted away. He lovingly calls them back.
“Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. — Malachi 3:7
No matter how far you may have drifted from God, you can return to Him today.
How Can You Return to Your First Love?
1.Return to Prayer
Prayer is fellowship with God. Make time to speak with Him again. You do not need complicated words. Come to Him sincerely and honestly.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (NKJV)
2. Return to God's Word
The Bible helps us know God's heart and understand His ways.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
Begin again by reading God's Word with a sincere heart.
3. Repent and Turn Away from Sin
Sin can create distance in our relationship with God, but God promises forgiveness when we genuinely repent.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
Do not allow shame to keep you away from God. Run to Him.
4. Worship God With Your Whole Heart
Worship is more than singing songs. It is surrendering our lives to God.
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37 (NKJV)
God wants a living relationship with us, not merely a religious routine.
5. Remember What God Has Done for You
Remember the times God helped, protected, provided for, forgave, and strengthened you.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” — Psalm 103:2 (NKJV)
Remembering God's goodness can reignite our love for Him.
It Is Time to Come Back
Perhaps you once prayed with passion, but now prayer has become difficult. Perhaps you once loved reading the Bible, but now you rarely open it. Perhaps you once felt close to God, but now you feel spiritually distant.
Today, God is calling you back.
You do not have to wait until you feel perfect. Simply turn your heart toward Him.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” — Revelation 3:20 (NKJV)
Returning to your first love means returning to a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
Let your heart once again hunger for God. Let prayer become your refuge. Let His Word become your guide. Let worship become your lifestyle.
The God who loved you first is still calling you back.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19 (NKJV)
Final Thought
You may have wandered, but you are not beyond God's reach. You may have become spiritually cold, but God can restore your passion. You may have failed, but His mercy is still available.
Today is a good day to return to your first love.
Return to God. Return to prayer. Return to His Word. Return to the love that first captured your heart.
🙏 Prayer: Lord, Help Me Return to My First Love
Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a humble heart. Forgive me for the times I have allowed distractions, sin, fear, and the cares of this world to take me away from You.
Lord Jesus, I want to return to my first love. Restore my passion for prayer. Give me a hunger for Your Word and a sincere desire to spend time in Your presence.
Cleanse my heart from everything that has taken Your place in my life. Help me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Restore the joy of my salvation and renew a right spirit within me. Help me not to serve You only out of habit, but to serve You with genuine love and devotion.
Thank You for never giving up on me. Thank You for Your mercy, grace, and unfailing love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
